About Crestone

Crestone is a remote town high in the Sangre de Cristo mountain range (8000 feet altitude).  It has been a hidden gem known to few outside those seeking refuge among the many spiritual centers offering retreats with their renowned gurus of the various lineages.  That, however, is quickly changing as this old mining town is becoming known for it’s stunning beauty, the three “fourteeners” sought by climbers, ornithologists seeking sightings of a slew of transitory birds, and affordable land/homes for retirees and those seeking vacation homes.

With this fairly recent influx of travelers and residents, support is flourishing to revitalize the charm of this old town which now flaunts TWO grocery stores, a hardware store, several cafes, long needed sidewalks, parking spaces (who knew that parking spaces would be worth mentioning!), a charming town park for events with a gorgeous fountain.  There is also a small but successful art gallery co-op for local artists that is certainly worth a visit.

Even if you are not a mountain climber, the many hikes offered are unsurpassed anywhere throughout Colorado.  The full moon gatherings is a time for locals to celebrate with laughter, music and drumming.  There is not sweeter 4th of July parade than here, albeit rather short lived, the party in the town park is filled with food, music, laughter and celebration.

Crestone offers the only outdoor, legal cremation site in the country.  The death of anyone in the community is attended by most in the community whether they knew the deceased or not… it is considered a time to show respect and celebration of the life and soul of a community member.  To attend a cremation is a most heart warming experience.

So, come experience all the diverse facets that this remote little community has to offer.  You’ll meet a unique blend of characters from Ph.D’s, artists, writers, musicians, dancers, actors, children who grow up here, to retirees from all over the world who stumbled upon this hidden gem and could not leave. Who knows, you may be the next who fall under the charming spell of Crestone!
